How an Artistic Dressage program is marked

Main criteria

The following are taken into account in awarding the score:

- The harmonious composition of the program and how well it fits the chosen music: this is essentially the overall look of the program. The horse must work in synchronization with the music. The choreography must suit both the music and the horse.

- Changes of speed or gait, and ease in the transitions and in the linking of movements.

- The program must use the whole surface of the arena and vary its patterns. The main elements must be performed in different places around the arena. Here again, the chosen music or theme must guide the choice of pattern, the direction, and where the main movements are placed.

- Ease of movement and technical accuracy in keeping with the music. Balance, rhythm and synchronization are all scored.

- The harmony of the rider and horse together.

- Interpretation of the theme of the music.

- Originality and innovation.

- The number of movements and their variety, and the level of technical difficulty.
